Parents and grandparents are welcome to volunteer by assisting in the student's classroom, doing work at home for the classroom, volunteering in the library, and/or chaperoning fieldtrips. Note that all classroom volunteers will need to have a free background check done before working in the classroom. Please contact the classroom teacher for more information.
HOSTS is a structured mentoring program which involves community members and parents in mentoring second and third grade students in reading and language arts. Students work with mentors four days a week using materials and activities prepared by the Title I teacher and teacher assistant who coordinate the program. The Lulu M. Ross School HOSTS program received national recognition as an Exemplary site for its HOSTS Structured Mentoring Program in Language Arts for the past seven years. In addition, we also participate in the Creative Mentoring program.
HOSTS Learning helps students achieve through a research-based, proven learning system that addresses the needs of every student in learning reading and math.
The ability of read well is the most important skill a student can learn. Sometimes children need more help than is available in the classroom. YOU CAN GIVE THAT HELP!
At Lulu Ross Elementary School in Milford, the HOSTS program is being implemented each day, Monday through Thursday. You can choose to work with a student for thirty minutes to one hour any day or all the days. All material is provided as well as training to help the student. And a HOSTS teacher is there to help you at all times.
Come and join us. You’ll be glad you did.
A Mentor Is...
Creative Mentoring supports in-school mentoring programs in New Castle, Kent and Sussex Counties of Delaware. We provide quality training to volunteer in-school mentors as well as help schools, in and out of Delaware, design and implement quality in-school mentoring programs.
To date, we have trained more than 6300 volunteers, including many for other mentoring programs.
At Lulu Ross Elementary, Creative Mentors give one hour each week to work one-on-one with a student to provide positive social interactions and assist with academics. Call today and see how you can be a part of this exciting program.
I could have finished my shopping
Or gotten the laundry done.
I could have taken a trip,
And had a lot of fun.
I could have watched a game show,
Or visited with a friend.
I could have balanced my checkbook,
Or brought the yard work to an end.
But, I used my precious time
In a very special way…
I helped a child
Learn to read today!
